47. Etchinghill bench

A magnificent new bench has been installed on the North Downs Way National Trail near the Tolsford Hill Radio mast on the outskirts of Etchingill. Measuring 2m long and made from English Oak (from the Kent Downs AONB) its inscribed with a quote from Shakespeare’s Richard II and has been installed on Ministry of Defence training land.

With panoramic views across to Summerhouse Hill with its dry valleys and chalk grassland the bench invites you to stop and ponder, to gaze across the English Channel and seems perfect for The Bards’ words “This blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this England" selected by Major Rick Beven as part of the design process.

Commissioned in 2018 in celebration of the Kent Downs AONB 50th anniversary and the North Downs Way National Trail 40th anniversary the project was made possible through working with the Ministry of Defence and The White Cliffs Countryside Partnership and would have not been possible without funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund and The North Downs Way National Trail.
