The Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) comes to an abrupt and dramatic end at the White Cliffs of Dover. In fact the White Cliffs extend to Folkestone to the West and Kingsdown to the east, both stretches of cliff are protected as Heritage Coasts.
The White Cliffs Countryside Project (WCCP) was set up in 1989 to help care for, and manage, these important coastal areas and the inland AONB.
The WCCP directly manages several large countryside sites that are of national and international importance in terms of landscape and wildlife. Public access to sites such as the Folkestone Downs, Dover's Western Heights and the Folkestone Warren provides excellent opportunities to enjoy this part of the AONB.
The WCCP has taken on new and exciting projects such as the Samphire Hoe site which we describe as 'the newest piece of England', a 80 acre country park set at the base of the White Cliffs in Dover created from the spoil from the construction of the channel tunnel.
The WCCP works hard to get people to enjoy and become involved in the countryside. Each year the project leads over 400 events taking people to new and undiscovered parts of the countryside and telling the stories of the landscape as we go.
The work of the project is greatly supported by a dedicated group of volunteers, there are over 150 volunteer events each year.
Families are well catered for with the WCCP Green Gang - events run in the school holidays for children and their families - there is pretty much one Green Gang event every single day of every school holiday!
There is a free colourful leaflet available for each WCCP site and the guided walks and volunteer programmes are published at Easter and October.
The WCCP is a partnership between, Dover District Council, Shepway District Council, Kent County Council, Eurotunnel, English Nature, The Countryside Agency,
The Kent Wildlife Trust, Folkestone and Dover Water Services, Environment Agency, National Trust and Kent Downs AONB Unit.
Several other organisations support our sister projects the Romney Marsh Countryside Project and the Miner's Way Project in the Coalfield Parishes..
