The dramatic 19th century fortifications of the Western Heights are surrounded by green slopes of ancient chalk grassland, rich in wild flowers and butterflies. There are fine view over the town, castle and Western Docks. The Western Heights are at their best in the spring and summer (April - July). There is a short interpretation trail around St Martin¹s Battery, and a longer (1 mile) trail around the former Grand Shaft Barracks.

Travel information: They are accessible using South Military Road from the A20, or using North Military Road from Dover town centre. There are two free car parks at St Martin¹s Battery. There is a waymarked walking route from Dover Priory railway station and Dover bus station. The unique Grand Shaft, a 19th century triple staircase, leads from Snargate Street (A20) up to the former Grand Shaft Barracks area.
