Thurnham Castle

Half a mile north of Thurnham near Detling

A 12th century flint built castle built on the edge of the North Downs with a spectacular view across east Kent. Abandoned in the 14th century it fellinto disrepair and the old flints taken away tfor other constructions. One side of the bailey wall still stands 10 feet high and originally enclosed an area of about 1/4 acre. The castle remains are situated in White Horse Wood Country Park and rhe North Downs Way National Trail runs alongside.
