Flying and Fighting

Location: White Cliffs Visitor Centre, Dover
Event Category: Guided Walks
Description: Meet at the White Cliffs Visitor Centre and discover the history of hellfire corner and it’s unique role in events of the 20th century. Your guide will cover events from Bleriot’s first crossing of the channel to defences used during World War II and beyond. Free event but donations welcome. Pre booking advisable. Literary Guided Walk - From Bard to Bond

Location: White Cliffs Visitor Centre, Dover
Event Category: Guided Walks
Description: From Bard to Bond. Join us for a walk to St Margaret’s Bay via South Foreland Lighthouse. A huge array of books, plays and poems contain references to this area with famous authors living in St Margaret’s and Dover. Discover the link between Shakespeare and James Bond. Guided Walk to Randall Manor Dig

Location: Shorne Woods Country Park

Description: The dig runs from Saturday 24th to Sunday 26th July and is open for self-guided public viewing. Follow the Heritage trail to point no.2. The Community Archaeologist will lead guided walks from the Visitor Centre to the archaeological dig. Booking required.

Bleriot Guided Walk

Location: White Cliffs Visitor Centre, Dover
Event Category: Guided Walks
Description: It is 100 years ago today that Louis Bleriot landed at Northfall Meadow, a short walk from the Visitor Centre. Alfred Harmsworth, the owner of the Daily Mail, was a great supporter of flying and in October 1908 offered a prize of £1,000 for the first airman to cross the English Channel. Bleriot decided he would attempt to win the prize and on 25th July 1909 took off from Les Baraques, near Calais at 4.41am. He landed at 5.17am and history was made. Dover celebrates today with a recreation flight, air pageant & firework display. Free event but donations welcome. Normal car park fees apply. Pre booking advisable.
