To access European funding the Kent Downs AONB Unit works in partnership with the White Cliffs Countryside Project, the Kentish Stour Countryside Project and, in France, the Parc Naturel Régional des Caps et Marais d’Opale and the Office National des Forêts.
The PNR des Caps et Marais d’Opale and the Kent Downs AONB have been working together since 1998. To date the Kent Downs AONB Unit has secured over £800,000 from the European Regional Development Fund to spend on landscape management and joint working with our French and English partners. Along with the Kentish Stour Countryside Project and the White Cliffs Countryside Project, the Kent Downs AONB Unit has led a wide a range of initiatives to improve the beauty and quality of our countryside.
Our current funding from the European Regional Development Fund is for the ‘Living Landscapes Project’ which runs from January 2005 to December 2006. This new funding enables us to build on our work so far and brings an additional £400,000 to the Kent Downs.
The project continues to fund popular activities such as guided walks, woodland biodiversity management, chalk grassland conservation and urban fringe initiatives. However, there will also be some new projects including equestrian management for wildlife workshops, Kent Downs gateway signing and a Kent Downs specific Highways Design Guide.
The PNR des Caps et Marais d’Opale has been awarded a similar level of funding.
