The rural Kent Downs AONB is not without influence from the bustling urban communities that surround the area. The links between the Kent Downs and its surrounding urban centres are important. This juxtaposition of urban and rural offers both opportunities and pressures. People can access the AONB to enjoy the special qualities of the Kent Downs but in contrast, activities such as fly tipping and car dumping create a negative and unmanaged perception of the urban fringe.
The Kent Downs AONB Unit has provided match funding, through the Kent Downs around Towns project, to support numerous partnership projects which aim to tackle the identified problems in the urban fringe areas.
Chartham Parish Council identified a project to clear fly tipped rubbish from a community wood and to provide sculptured seats which have views into the AONB.
The White Cliffs Countryside Project identified the need to enhance corridors to the countryside though signage and path improvements.
These and many other projects identified by local communities have received funding through the Kent Downs Around Towns Project. Contact the AONB Unit for more details.
