Head for the Hills and Celebrate!

50 years of the Kent Downs and 40 years of the North Downs Way National Trail!

We are thrilled to announce that 2018 is the year of celebrations for the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB)!  The Kent Downs AONB designation is 50 years old and the North Downs Way, which snakes through the AONB area, is 40 years old this year.

To celebrate plenty of free events and fun family activities are planned for 2018. There will be opportunities to get involved from bat walks and bug hunts to birthday parties, pilgrimages, guided walks, art workshops and archaeological digs; something for everyone. We are also excited to be working with the Royal Geographical Society on the development and promotion of new view points. These will be available on the Royal Geographical Society's Discovering Britain Website and will help you to explore and see the AONB from some of its best points. We will be releasing one view point per month so watch this space and visit https://www.discoveringbritain.org/activities/south-east-england/ to see the view points

Discovering Britain is a major new walking project from the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG) to encourage deeper engagement with Britain’s extraordinary and diverse landscapes.

Our website features over 350 long walks, short trails and viewpoints which will unlock and explore the stories of Britain through its geography, history and culture. Encompassing both the countryside and the townscape, the focus of the walks will be on discovering and exploring the stories of our rich diverse landscapes.

Throughout the year we will be partnering with Kent Life to publish a series of articles about the Kent Downs – just pick up a copy, follow this link http://www.kent-life.co.uk  or subscribe here https://www.subscriptionsave.co.uk/Magazines/Regional-Magazines/Kent-Life/MMMXS7LE

Nick Johannsen Director of the Kent Downs AONB unit said “ In the 50 years since the Kent Downs was designated there has been massive changes in Kent; amid this the beauty of Kent Downs remains constant and ever more important. 2018 is a year to enjoy and celebrate the beautiful landscapes of the Kent Downs - we’ll also look towards the years to come and will be asking as many people as possible to participating in shaping its future.”

The North Downs Way is one of the National Trails which is maintained and promoted by the national trails network. The North Downs Way trail is looked after by Pete Morris, Pete will be leading the celebrations on the trail in 2018.  Pete Morris North Downs Way Trail Officer Said “Since the North Downs Way opened in 1978 the trail has been developed to attract walkers from near and far. In 2018 we will provide an opportunity for people to join organised, led walks by people who base their businesses along the trail. We have invested in two major arts projects which we feel will bring the trail to the attention of new audiences.  We continue to invest in enhancement projects and next year we hope to make some major improvements on the Folkestone Downs section, replace all signs along the surrey section, provide alternative cycle routes along the trail and to link the 40+ train stations along the trail to the countryside giving more people access to our wonderful landscapes.”  We will be regularly updating our latest events on our website www.kentdowns.org.uk and social media so watch this space for updates and opportunities to join in. Have your say!

As part of the celebratory year we will be inviting you to have your say on how the AONB is managed in the future, your opinions on the main priorities and threats for the area and how we might overcome them in the future will be essential. There will be lots of opportunities to feed into the management plan at all of our events and also at our special “Have Your Say” events which will be happening throughout the year. We encourage you to get involved where you can as the AONB is a unique and special place for everyone and your thoughts and opinions on how it is managed are essential to ensure it is safeguarded for future generations.
