Discover Perry Wood
This is a project funded by Heritage Lottery Fund being run by Swale Borough Council and the Mid Kent Downs Project (a Countryside Partnership). It has been developed to provide a better understanding of Perry Wood and its value in the Kent Downs landscape.
The main objectives are:
1) To carry out historical research with professional archaeologists from the Trust for Thanet Archaeology, with community involvement;
2) To use the outcomes from the historical research with wildlife data to feed into a new Kent Wildlife Trust management plan for the wood, upon which the community will be consulted;
3) To hold at least 2 events for locals and visitors per year, exploring the wildlife , landscape and historical value of the site;
4) To use the research findings to provide new interpretation for the woods;
5) To provide a nature trail and education pack for local school use;
6) To replace 'The Pulpit' with a bigger and better version, using local materials;
7) To carry out some footpath and bridleway restoration, improving conditions for walkers
For further details of the project and opportunities for taking part in this exciting project click here to download a leaflet 'Discover Perry Wood'.
If you have your own memories of Perry Wood then please let us know about them. You can either email these to Sally Evans at sally.evans@kentdowns.org.uk or print off a copy of the Memories Trail leaflet and take a walk around Perry Wood to record what in Perry Wood is special to you.
Volunteers are needed to help with the conservation work in the wood so if you are able to spend a few hours doing some bracken and rhodedendron clearance or taking cuttings from the heather then please let Sally know.
