The Barham Downs is an extensive area of downland on the North Downs Way, south east of Canterbury. They offer far reaching views across East Kent and are part of the new pilgrimage route, the Via Francigena, which can be followed all the way to Rome! Sample a part of this marathon journey on a six mile circular walk starting in the attractive nearby village of Adisham. Further details on this walk can be found at www.nationaltrail. co.uk/ northdowns and click on ‘'planning a visit’.
The North Downs Way
The North Downs Way is a National Trail which runs from Farnham in Surrey to Dover in Kent, following the highest point of the North Downs where possible. It is 153 miles long. To do the whole trail would take about 12 days of walking, but there are shorter circular walks which can be completed in a day. See the National Trail website for further details of how to plan your route and for places to stay overnight. Much of the trail follows the route of the Pilgrims Way which historically Pilgrims would have followed as they travelled from Winchester to Canterbury. It passes through a variety of landscapes including eight castles, three cathedrals and three archbishops palaces. In parts the route follows the Pilgrims Way which was one of the routes Pilgrims took to pay homage to Thomas Becket at Canterbury Cathedral.
